Portrait of Mège-Mouriès (1817-1880)
By c. of the Margarine and Edible Fats Industry Chamber
On July 15 th 1869, Mège-Mouriès was granted a patent
for the “ production of certain fats of animal origin”.
Production of this substance, an ancestor to margarine, was expected to replace butter,
a foodstuff too expensive for low-income people.
Further research was undertaken for the use of tropical oil in the preparation of margarine.
