MARGARINE, A PRODUCT FOR THE NAVY ?

We are indebted to a pharmacist, Mège-Mouriès, for the invention of margarine. He competed successfully for a prize offered by Napoleon III in order to replace butter, which was at the time expensive and difficult to store, for the alimentation of sailors and poor people.

Nowadays, margarine is broadly consumed.

Margarine is an emulsion of oil and water or milk. It is a typical agro-industrial product.
