It is being used by the inhabitants of the Amazon to extract the toxic juice from cassava pulp. When full of cassava, the sheath enlarges considerably at the expense of its length. Stretching the sheath by a lever movement strongly compresses the contents and the toxic juice floxs off at the bottom.
