In the middle of the 3rd millenial a great number of principalities expanded around large cities such as Ebla or Mari. This last one reached its apogee first around 2400 years BP and later around 1750 BP. The different parts of this city had special functions as shown on the following map.

The last king ruling Mari whose name was Zimri-Lim, could not prevent the destruction of the city by babylonian Hammurabi.
